Compensation Amounts

Examples of Compensation in Personal Injury Cases

When an accident is covered under the Tort Liability Act — such as a traffic accident or work accident at sea — the amount of compensation is determined by law. The assessment takes into account several factors, including the age of the injured person, income in previous years, and the expert evaluation report on the lasting effects of the accident.

In cases involving workplace or leisure accidents, the compensation amount depends on the insurance coverage in effect on the date of the accident, along with the expert evaluation of its consequences.

It is not possible to determine the exact amount of compensation until the expert report is complete, but here are some real examples:

  • Rosa, 38, suffered injuries to her back and neck after a rear-end collision. She received 16 million ISK in compensation.
  • Maria, 28, was in a rear-end collision and suffered injuries to her back and neck. She received 10.5 million ISK in compensation.
  • Andres, 27, was injured in his neck and back in a collision. He received 11.2 million ISK in compensation.
  • Anna was in a car accident and suffered injuries to her neck and back. She received 7.2 million ISK in compensation.
  • Hersir, 59, was in a traffic accident and suffered injuries to his back and hip. He received 7.9 million ISK in compensation.
  • Kristin suffered injuries to her shoulders and upper back in a traffic accident. She received 11.6 million ISK in compensation.
  • Aron, 32, was in a traffic accident and suffered injuries to his neck. He received 7.7 million ISK in compensation.
  • Edda, 24, suffered injuries to her back after a car accident. She received 18.5 million ISK in compensation.
  • Egill, 27, was injured in a collision. He received 11.2 million ISK in compensation.

All of these examples are based on real cases — only the names have been changed.
