The Compensation Process – Step by Step
Step 1
Accident Notification
The person who has suffered an accident must notify the physical injury to the relevant insurance company. At Slysabætur, we assist you in submitting the notification if it has not already been done.
Step 2
Initial Data Collection
We obtain certificates or communication records from the healthcare institution that the injured party first visited after the accident.
Step 3
Insurance Company's Position
When the initial data has been received, we forward it to the insurance company. The company then takes a position on liability for compensation in the case.
Step 4
Recognition of Liability
When the insurance company approves liability, it is possible to request reimbursement for incurred expenses, such as for medical visits, physical therapy, and medications.
Step 5
Stability Point
After liability has been recognized, data collection pauses until the injured party has reached a stability point, which is the time point when no further recovery is expected. Usually, data collection begins again about 10 months after the accident date.
Step 6
Collection of Final Data
When the stability point has been reached and it is clear whether permanent physical injury exists, the collection of final data begins. Then, final certificates are requested from the treatment providers that the injured party has been treated by due to the accident.
Step 7
Assessment of Permanent Disability
Based on the final data, an assessment is made of whether there is permanent disability and, if so, its extent. This assessment forms the basis for calculating compensation for permanent disability.
Step 8
Compensation Calculation
When all data has been collected and the extent of permanent disability has been determined, the total compensation is calculated. This includes compensation for permanent disability, suffering, and other losses.
Step 9
Settlement
When the compensation has been calculated, a settlement is made with the insurance company. If an agreement cannot be reached, the case may be taken to court.
